Maximizing Small Spaces

June 12, 2015 by prisminteriors

Just because you have a limit on space, doesn’t mean you have to have any limit on style. Calgary interior designers offer the following hot tips on how to maximize your space and make it pop, no matter how small the square footage:

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most overlooked design aspects in any home, but good lighting is absolutely vital in a small space. Natural light is your best option, but augment it with artificial lighting fixtures as much as possible. From floor lamps and table lamps to sconces and recessed lights, lights brighten the space and make it seem larger than it truly is.

Mirrors

The reflective quality of mirrors has been used by Calgary interior designers for ages to create the illusion of a larger space. When used effectively, mirrors make rooms appear both larger and brighter.

Proportion

You don’t need to buy pint-sized furniture in the hope that the smaller scale will make the room appear larger in contrast. Scale down items that take up space but have less practical value, like end tables and coffee tables, but keep your furniture at a practical size. At Prism Interiors, we can design custom built-in cabinetry to make efficient use of the space without having to sacrifice on cozy furniture.

Neutrals

Smart use of neutral tones can make a room feel much larger than it is. Neutral doesn’t mean boring, though – elegant cream, deep chocolate, or smoky charcoal are classic neutral tones which pair so well with other hues and patterns to create the perception of larger space.

Colour

Once you have built a neutral base, upgrade it with pops of colour. Cool yet bold tones like blue, violet, and green come highly recommended by Calgary interior designers because they make walls seem like they’re backing away. When it comes to pillows, art, and décor, this is your opportunity to experiment. Try seasonal themes, or mixing and matching until you find the right pairing.

Declutter

Clutter is one of the biggest culprits in making a small room seem smaller. Simply cleaning up clutter and reducing a room to its essential parts instantly increases the size perception of a room. Donate, throw away, or store any items that are no longer used or valued. The design team at Prism Interiors can come up with plenty of smart storage ideas so all your belongings are kept in their right place, but out of sight.
Don’t let your design ambitions be limited by a small footprint. Contact Prism Interiors today to transform the look and function of your living space.
