Whether it’s a den for the kids, or a space to set up the exercise equipment, sometimes all we need is just a little extra space to retreat to now and then – and your basement could be that perfect place. With a little imagination and some steps to help guide it to fruition, it can be that getaway space you’ve always wanted. Just follow this outline to help guide you in transforming your basement into a space that’s fit for anything.
Use Your Imagination
First, you must envision what you would like this space to be used for. If it’s going to be used for your kids to have somewhere to entertain their friends when they visit, or a spot to retreat to for some widescreen entertainment – start to think of your layout in the floor plan that is both functional and practical for the size. We like to advise Clients that when they are creating a basement room with a specific purpose (for example a games room or playroom for the kids), that they think of how this new space could easily be used as an extra bedroom down the road if need be. Adding a closet in the room along with double sliding lockable doors or French doors with opaque glass, would be enough to do just that.
The Lay of the Land
Once you have an idea of what your basement will be utilized for, you will need a floor plan to know where everything will be placed along with an understanding of the general sizing of the areas and rooms. This will help you make sense whether things may or may not fit, and give you an idea of how big that bathroom should be, and so on. Aside from that, new basement developments require a building permit so drawings are necessary for the application submission to the City in order to gain approval prior to construction of same.
Preliminary Inspection with the Contractor
For those of you who have older homes looking to renovate your existing basement, we also like to consider the foundation, review the basement windows and electrical to see what needs to be done to bring them up to code, and check the plumbing for any poly bead piping that should be removed and replaced since everything would be opened up and accessible during the renovation.
Create a Budget
With all of those ideas bouncing around in your head, it’s important to determine what you can actually afford for your renovation investment. Discussing this with your Contractor will better allow him to work with you in establishing what the design will require, and what items you may need to place lower down on the priority list. Prism Interiors will prepare a well thought-out estimate of services based on your needs while keeping your investment amount in mind too.
